On March 9th, 2014, a suicide bombing in Hillah, Iraq, close to the ruins of Babylon, cost the lives of almost 50 people. On May 5th, 2014, Fabian Knecht used the debris created by this devastating explosion for VERDRÄNGUNG [repression, lash on], a performance in Manhattan. On an imaginary meridian connecting Hillah and the World Trade Center, wearing a suit rubbed in the dust from Hillah, he walked through the streets of New York. His appearance vaguely resembled the well-known photographs taken on 9/11 showing people covered in dust, seemingly lost in the urban canyons. VERDRÄNGUNG points to a tragedy (one of many) that happened “far away”. The uncanny dust on the suit of an artist slowly approaching the Freedom Tower. The repressed is here.
