Julius von Bismarck
Punishment #3, 2011
Inkjet print
50 x 75 cm

Made up of photographs and videos, the landscapes in the “Punishment” series are reminiscent of romanti- cism. Massive rocks, deep canyons, glaciers, the sea and a mountain lake. They are classic nature motives. In every image there is a person which in relation to the scenery depicted, appears as very small. Incessantly and vigorously, to the point of exhaustion, Julius von Bismarck lashes the rocks, the canyon, the sea...

In 480 B.C. the Persian King Xerxes I. punished the sea with a lashing of 300 strokes when a storm destroyed his army’s bridges.
